Years Experience
The Storage Equipment Industry Racking Specialist (SEIRS) registration is the UK's only formally recognised qualification for racking inspectors, awarded after written and practical examination by SEMA. UM Storage Systems' inspectors are SEIRS-registered, fully insured, and deliver annual racking inspections across every UK postcode.
Every inspection is delivered to the SEMA Code of Practice for Pallet Racking (and Cantilever Racking, where applicable), with a same-day digital report, photographic Red/Amber/Green grading on every defect, and a costed repair quote where remediation is needed.
What an Annual SEIRS Inspection Covers
A full SEIRS-aligned inspection examines every upright, beam, brace, base plate, beam connector, splice, footplate and load notice in your installation. Defects are graded Red (immediate), Amber (within four weeks) or Green (acceptable, monitor) per SEMA convention. Each defect is photographed and located on a site plan for traceability.
The inspection also covers PRRS (the documented internal weekly check by your trained warehouse staff), load notice currency, aisle clearance, and any structural changes since the previous inspection.
Why You Must Have an Annual Inspection
PUWER 1998 requires that work equipment is maintained in efficient working order. HSE HSG76 explicitly recommends annual inspection by a competent person — interpreted in industry as a SEIRS-registered inspector. Most commercial property insurers now require evidence of annual inspection as a condition of cover.
Failure to inspect doesn't just risk safety — it risks insurance invalidation, HSE prohibition notices, and personal liability under HSWA 1974 for directors and managers.
What You Get From UM Storage Systems
Same-day digital inspection report, issued before the inspector leaves site. Full Red/Amber/Green photo log of every defect. Repair quote (no obligation) for any remediation required. Updated load notice schedule. Annual reminder for the next cycle. Optional fixed-fee repair contract to keep your installation compliant year-round.
Inspection findings can be uploaded to our digital inspection portal for live multi-site visibility, ideal for facilities managers and 3PL operators with multiple warehouses.
PRRS, Training and Competence
SEMA also requires a Person Responsible for Racking Safety (PRRS) at every site — typically a warehouse manager or supervisor — who carries out documented weekly walk-around inspections between annual SEIRS visits. We provide PRRS training (half-day on-site or remote) and inspection log books to support compliance.
Training certificates are issued on completion and are valid for three years.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What is SEIRS and why does it matter?
SEIRS is the Storage Equipment Industry Racking Specialist registration — the UK's only formally recognised qualification for racking inspectors, awarded by SEMA. SEIRS registration is the standard your insurer and HSE will expect.
How often should racking be inspected?
Annually by a SEIRS inspector (HSG76 / SEMA), supplemented by documented weekly walk-around inspections by your trained PRRS. Cold stores and high-impact environments may justify twice-yearly SEIRS visits.
What happens if you find Red defects?
Red defects must be unloaded and repaired within 24 hours. We can usually quote and mobilise a same-day or next-day repair to minimise operational disruption.
Do you offer fixed-fee multi-site contracts?
Yes. We hold annual contracts with national logistics, retail and manufacturing operators covering single visits to dozens of sites a year, with consolidated reporting and a single point of contact.
