HOW TO INSPECT USED PALLET RACKING BEFORE BUYING

Buying used pallet racking can save your business thousands — but only if the racking is structurally sound. A bent upright or cracked weld can turn a bargain into a serious safety hazard. This guide gives you a complete 12-point inspection checklist so you know exactly what to look for before handing over any money.

THE 12-POINT USED RACKING INSPECTION CHECKLIST
Check Upright Frames for Straightness
Stand at one end of the racking run and look along the length. Uprights should be perfectly vertical. Any visible lean, bow, or twist indicates structural damage. Even a small bend can significantly reduce the frame's load capacity. Run your hand along the upright — you shouldn't feel any dents or deformations.
Inspect Base Plates and Floor Fixings
Base plates should be flat, undamaged, and have all bolt holes intact. Check for cracks around the weld where the upright meets the baseplate — this is a common failure point, especially after forklift impacts. Missing or bent base plates are a red flag.
Examine Horizontal and Diagonal Bracing
The cross-bracing on the back of the frame gives the upright its strength. Every brace should be straight, securely welded or bolted, and free from damage. A missing or bent brace compromises the entire frame's stability.
Test Beam Connectors
Beam connectors (the hooks or clips that attach beams to uprights) must engage fully and securely. Try to lift the beam — it shouldn't move. Damaged, bent, or worn connectors mean the beam could dislodge under load. Check that safety locking pins are present and functional.
Check Beams for Deflection
Place a straight edge along the underside of each beam. There should be no permanent sag or bow. A beam that deflects visibly without load has been overloaded at some point and may have reduced capacity. Minor surface scratches are cosmetic — structural bowing is not.
Look for Rust and Corrosion
Surface rust on paint is usually cosmetic. Deep pitting, flaking, or rust that has eaten into the steel reduces the cross-section and weakens the component. Pay special attention to base plates and lower sections of uprights where moisture collects.
Verify Brand and Compatibility
Mixing brands is dangerous — beam connectors from one manufacturer rarely fit frames from another. Confirm the brand stamped on frames and beams (Dexion, Link 51, Redirack, Apex, etc.) and ensure all components in your order are the same system.
Confirm Dimensions Match Your Requirements
Measure frame heights, frame depths, and beam lengths. Standard UK pallet racking beams are typically 2,700mm for two-pallet bays or 1,100mm for single-pallet bays. Frame depths are usually 900mm or 1,100mm. Even 50mm difference can cause problems.
Check Load Rating Labels
Every beam should have a load rating label or stamp. If there's no visible capacity rating, treat the component with caution. Your supplier should be able to confirm load capacities from the manufacturer's data based on the beam profile.
Inspect Safety Clips and Locking Pins
Safety clips prevent beams from being accidentally dislodged. Every beam end should have a clip. Missing clips are cheap to replace but indicate the racking may not have been well maintained.
Count All Components
Before agreeing to purchase, get a full component list: number of uprights, beams, bracing panels, base plates, safety clips, and footplate bolts. Missing components add unexpected costs. A reputable supplier provides a complete bill of materials.
Ask About History and Documentation
Where was the racking used? How old is it? Has it been inspected? Was it professionally dismantled? Racking that was carefully removed by a specialist team is far more likely to be in good condition than racking that was ripped out by a demolition crew.
AUTOMATIC REJECTION CRITERIA
If you find any of the following, do not buy the racking:
- ✕ Upright bent more than 10mm out of true over any 1-metre length
- ✕ Cracked welds at any connection point
- ✕ Deep corrosion that has reduced the steel thickness
- ✕ Beams with permanent deflection (sag) visible to the naked eye
- ✕ Modified uprights — holes drilled, sections cut, or brackets welded on
- ✕ Mixed brands within the same lot with no compatibility confirmation
