    "Is Used Racking Really As Safe?"

    Short answer: yes, when it's inspected properly. The longer answer is what separates a £40 Gumtree bargain from racking you'd trust your team to stand under. Every used component we sell goes through a five-stage process before it ships:

    1. Source verification — chain of custody, original manufacturer ID, load history where available.
    2. Dismantle by our own SEMA-trained crew — never a sub-contracted weekend team.
    3. Component-level inspection against the SEMA RAG criteria. Anything Red is scrapped, not resold.
    4. Refurbishment — repaint, replace fixings, straighten Amber-grade items where economic.
    5. Re-certification — load notice issued, install certificate at handover, first-year inspection included.

    The HSE doesn't care whether your steel was rolled in 2024 or 2004. It cares about deflection, weld integrity, anchor security and load discipline. Inspected used racking and new racking pass and fail those tests on identical criteria.

All UM Storage Systems used pallet racking is dismantled by our own SEMA-trained engineers, inspected component-by-component against the SEMA Red/Amber/Green criteria, load-tested where required, and refurbished or scrapped accordingly. Once installed it carries the same statutory safety standing as new racking under PUWER 1998 and HSG76.

    Quality used pallet racking from brands like Dexion, Link 51, Apex and Redirack routinely delivers 20+ years of further service. Steel doesn't fatigue under static pallet loads; the real lifespan drivers are forklift impact, environment (cold store, chemicals) and load discipline — none of which favour new over used.

    Yes — and it's often the most cost-effective layout. We frequently install used uprights and beams for the bulk of a warehouse, then supplement with new components where you need bespoke heights, extra-heavy beam capacities or matched manufacturer warranties. The only hard rule: never mix uprights and beams from different manufacturers in the same bay.

    Typical savings are 40–60% versus equivalent new.
