    RACKING INSPECTIONS
    & SAFETY AUDITS UK

Damaged or overloaded pallet racking is one of the most serious hazards in any warehouse. A single racking collapse can cause catastrophic injuries, fatalities, and hundreds of thousands of pounds in damage. UM Storage Systems provides certified racking inspections across the UK to ensure your warehouse racking meets all HSE safety standards and industry best practices.

    WHY RACKING INSPECTIONS ARE ESSENTIAL

The Health and Safety Executive (HSE) estimates that over 50% of warehouse pallet racking in the UK has some form of damage. Much of this damage goes undetected because it is not visible from normal working positions or because warehouse staff are not trained to recognise it.

A forklift truck travelling at just 4 mph can generate enough force to compromise a racking upright. A single damaged upright can reduce the load-bearing capacity of an entire bay by up to 50%. In the worst-case scenario, this leads to progressive racking collapse — where one bay failure triggers adjacent bays to fail, causing a catastrophic domino effect.

Regular professional inspections identify damage early, before it becomes a safety hazard. They also provide the documented evidence that the HSE will require if an incident occurs. Without evidence of regular inspections, directors and managers can face personal criminal prosecution under health and safety legislation.

    THE THREE-TIER INSPECTION SYSTEM

Industry best practice, as set out by SEMA and EN 15635, recommends a three-tier approach to racking safety:

Level 1 — Immediate Reporting (Daily)

All warehouse personnel should be trained to recognise obvious damage and report it immediately. This includes bent or buckled uprights, dislodged beams, and overloaded bays. Damaged bays must be offloaded and isolated pending repair.

    Level 2 — Regular Inspections (Weekly/Monthly)

A designated, trained person (the Person Responsible for Racking Safety, or PRRS) carries out scheduled visual inspections using a standardised checklist. Findings are recorded and actioned.

Level 3 — Expert Inspection (Annual)

A competent external inspector carries out a thorough, detailed inspection of all racking with written reports, photographic evidence, and remedial recommendations. This is the inspection UM Storage Systems provides.

    WHAT OUR INSPECTORS CHECK

Our SEMA-trained inspectors examine every component of your racking installation:

Upright frames for dents, bends, and cracks
    Beam connectors and locking pins
Base plates and anchor bolt fixings
    Bracing — horizontal and diagonal
    Load notices and labelling
    Frame-to-floor level and plumb
    Overloading and uneven load distribution
    Aisle widths and clearances
    Row spacers and back-to-back ties
    Column protectors and end-of-aisle guards
    Fork lift damage patterns
    Compliance with original design specifications

    RISK RATING SYSTEM

Every finding is classified using a clear traffic-light risk rating so you know exactly what action to take and how urgently:

    RED RISK

Immediate action required. Offload, isolate, and repair before any further use. Serious safety hazard.

    AMBER RISK

Action required within 4 weeks. Damage has been identified that requires repair but does not present an immediate danger.

    GREEN

Observation noted. Minor findings to monitor and address during planned maintenance or at the next inspection.

    Industry-Leading Technology

    REAL-TIME DIGITAL
    INSPECTION PORTAL

Unlike traditional inspection services that bury you in paperwork and leave you waiting days for reports, UM Storage Systems operates a fully digital inspection portal — giving you instant, transparent access to every finding the moment it's recorded on site.

Our inspectors capture high-resolution photographs of every damage point, annotation, and repair recommendation directly into the portal during the inspection. No clipboards, no handwritten notes, no delays. Your complete inspection report — with photographic evidence, risk ratings, and sign-off requirements — is available to view, download, and action before our inspector has even left your premises.

This isn't a PDF emailed three days later. It's a live, interactive system that transforms how you manage racking safety — putting you in control of compliance from the moment the inspection begins.

    Instant Photo Documentation

Every damaged component is photographed on site and uploaded in real time. See exactly what was found, where it was found, and how severe it is — with pinpoint accuracy and zero ambiguity.

    Same-Day Digital Reports

Your full inspection report is compiled and delivered digitally — complete with risk ratings, photographic evidence, and prioritised remedial actions — often before our team has left your premises.

    Paperless & Audit-Ready

Eliminate filing cabinets of paper reports. Every inspection is stored securely in your digital portal, fully searchable and ready for HSE audits, insurance reviews, or internal compliance checks at a moment's notice.

    Digital Sign-Off Workflow

Repairs and remedial actions require formal sign-off. Our portal handles it digitally — track what's been actioned, by whom, and when, with a complete audit trail accessible from any device.

    Secure & Confidential

Your inspection data is stored securely with role-based access controls. Only authorised personnel in your organisation can view, download, or action reports — ensuring full data protection compliance.

    Track Trends Over Time

With every inspection logged digitally, you can track damage trends across inspections, identify repeat problem areas, and make data-driven decisions about racking maintenance and forklift training.
