Years Experience
Cold storage warehousing costs roughly four to six times more per cubic metre to operate than ambient storage, so the financial case for high-density racking inside a chiller or freezer is overwhelming. UM Storage Systems designs, supplies and installs pallet racking specifically engineered for cold-store environments — drive-in, push-back, VNA and selective — using galvanised, epoxy-coated or stainless steel finishes rated to -30°C and below.
Every cold-store project is specified around your refrigeration envelope, evaporator positions, pallet handling fleet and stock rotation pattern. We work nights and weekends on live cold stores to keep your operation running while we install.
Why Density Matters in a Cold Store
The cost of refrigerating a cubic metre of cold-store space dwarfs the cost of the racking that occupies it. Compressing storage — whether by drive-in, push-back, VNA or simply by swapping single-deep selective for double-deep — directly reduces your refrigeration energy bill, your refrigerant inventory and your carbon footprint.
We routinely deliver 30-50% reductions in cold-store footprint when we replace selective racking with drive-in or push-back, with payback periods of 18-30 months purely on refrigeration energy savings.
Finishes and Material Specification
Standard cold-store racking is hot-dip galvanised to BS EN ISO 1461 for full corrosion protection in condensing environments. For high-humidity blast freezers and food-contact applications we specify epoxy-coated or stainless steel components. All beam connectors, bolts and accessories are matched to the chosen finish to avoid galvanic corrosion.
Pallet support rails, guide rails and roller carts are likewise supplied in galvanised or stainless finish, with low-temperature-rated bearings on push-back and pallet-flow systems.
Installation in a Live Cold Store
Most cold-store racking projects must be completed without taking the chiller or freezer down. We work night shifts, weekend shifts or in phased zones, with our crews fully equipped for sub-zero working — insulated PPE, low-temperature lubricants, condensation-tolerant power tools and managed humidity controls.
Every installation is closed out with a SEIRS-aligned handover inspection, load notices fitted to every aisle, and a written O&M pack including refrigeration interface drawings.
Inspection, Repair and Aftercare
Cold-store racking suffers more impact damage than ambient racking because operators wear bulky PPE, visibility is poor and traction is unpredictable. We strongly recommend twice-yearly SEIRS inspections in chilled and frozen environments, with a fast-response repair contract to replace damaged components before they become safety risks.
Our cold-store repair service supplies SEMA-aligned replacement uprights, beams and protectors in matched galvanised or epoxy finish, with night-shift installation to minimise operational disruption.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
What finishes are available for cold-store racking?
Hot-dip galvanised (most common), epoxy-coated for high-humidity blast freezers, and stainless steel for food-contact and pharmaceutical environments. We will specify the right finish for your operating temperature and humidity.
Can you install racking in a live cold store?
Yes — most of our cold-store projects are installed at night or in phased zones with the chiller or freezer remaining live. Our crews are fully equipped for sub-zero working.
How often should cold-store racking be inspected?
We recommend twice-yearly SEIRS inspections in chilled and frozen environments because impact damage rates are higher than in ambient warehouses.
Do you also supply the dock seals and rapid-roll doors?
Through our extended supply network, yes. We can package the cold-store racking with refrigeration interface works as a single project.
