    What Is Drive-In Pallet Racking?

    Drive-in pallet racking is a Last-In-First-Out (LIFO) high-density storage system in which pallets are stored on horizontal cantilever rails fixed to upright frames. Forklift trucks drive directly into a lane and deposit pallets from the rear of the lane forwards, eliminating the need for individual picking aisles. The result is a storage density typically two to three times greater than conventional adjustable pallet racking.

    Each lane is loaded with a single SKU to maintain stock integrity, and lanes are typically 6 to 10 pallets deep and 3 to 6 levels high. Lift-out beams, guide rails and reinforced uprights protect the structure from the inevitable forklift impacts that occur in this style of operation.     Drive-In vs Drive-Through Racking

    Drive-in systems have a single open face: pallets enter and exit from the same end, producing a Last-In-First-Out (LIFO) rotation pattern. This is ideal for non-perishable goods, raw materials, packaging or buffer stock where date sequence is not critical.

    Drive-through systems open at both ends and operate on a First-In-First-Out (FIFO) basis. They are favoured by chilled food distributors, pharmaceutical manufacturers and contract logistics providers who must rotate stock by batch or expiry date.
