Pallet racking load notices are a legal and insurance requirement for every commercial racking installation in the UK. SEMA, HSE HSG76 and PUWER 1998 all require that the maximum permitted unit load and total bay load are clearly displayed at every aisle entrance — failure to do so can invalidate insurance, breach PUWER and trigger HSE enforcement notices.
UM Storage Systems supplies SEMA-aligned load notices, aisle entry plates, end-of-aisle warning signage and full warehouse safety sign packages, individually designed for your installation and installed UK-wide.
What a SEMA-Compliant Load Notice Must Show
A SEMA-compliant load notice must show: the manufacturer, the maximum unit load (per pallet), the maximum bay load, the beam level configuration, and the date of installation or last engineering check. Notices must be fixed at every aisle entrance, in clear sight of the operator at the start of the run.
We design every notice to your specific installation: configurable beam levels, mixed unit load capacity, or zoned heavy/light bays are all accommodated. Standard notices are 300x200mm rigid PVC; we also offer aluminium, photoluminescent and bespoke sizes.
When Are Load Notices Required?
Load notices are required at handover of every new racking installation, after every reconfiguration that changes beam levels or load class, and after any repair that changes upright capacity. They should also be replaced if they become illegible through fading, dirt or damage.
If your annual SEIRS inspection identifies missing or out-of-date load notices, your inspector will mark this as a non-compliance and recommend immediate remediation. UM Storage Systems can supply replacement notices same-week.
Beyond Load Notices: Warehouse Safety Signage
We also supply the full range of warehouse safety signage: forklift route markings, pedestrian segregation signs, fire route signs, COSHH and storage signs, end-of-aisle protectors, and racking inspection record holders.
Signage packages can be designed and installed alongside a new racking project, a SEIRS inspection cycle, or as a standalone compliance upgrade.
Installation and Documentation
Notices are fitted by our racking inspectors during installation or inspection visits. Locations are recorded on a site plan and added to your O&M file for inspection traceability.
If you self-install, we provide adhesive-backed or screw-fix variants and a documented fitting plan.
Key Features
Typical UK Applications
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
Are load notices a legal requirement?
Effectively yes — HSE HSG76, SEMA codes of practice and PUWER 1998 all require the maximum unit and bay loads to be clearly displayed. Missing notices are a frequent finding on insurance audits and HSE inspections.
How quickly can you supply replacement notices?
Standard sizes typically same-week from order. Custom designs 7-10 working days.
Can I install the notices myself?
Yes — we supply adhesive-backed or screw-fix variants with a documented fitting plan. Many customers self-install on smaller sites and ask us to fit on larger or multi-aisle installations.
Do you supply notices for non-UM racking?
Yes. We design notices for any UK or European racking brand. Provide the manufacturer, beam configuration and unit load and we will produce SEMA-aligned notices to suit.
