Welded Wire Mesh Decking

Welded wire mesh decking is steel mesh framed in a steel surround that drops directly onto the beam pair. The major advantage is sprinkler-compliance: in-rack sprinklers depend on water reaching every level of stock, which means the deck must allow water to pass through. Solid chipboard does not. Mesh decking is therefore mandatory in many sprinklered warehouses.

Mesh also stops small parts from rolling off the back, lets dust drop through, and is non-combustible — important for fire risk classification and insurance. Capacities up to 1,300kg uniformly distributed per panel are standard.

Chipboard / Timber Decking

38mm chipboard is the most widely specified decking for non-sprinklered ambient warehouses. It is cheap, quick to install, and easy to cut to size. It also offers a continuous solid surface that suits hand-loaded longspan shelving better than mesh, particularly for archive boxes, paper records and small loose components that would otherwise need bins.

Limitations: combustible (problematic for sprinkler systems), absorbs moisture (problematic in cold stores and humid environments), and shorter service life than steel or mesh in heavy-use applications.

Galvanised Steel Decking

Galvanised steel decking — solid sheet or perforated — sits between mesh and timber. It offers a continuous solid surface (like timber) but is non-combustible (like mesh) and tolerates moisture far better than chipboard. The trade-off is cost: steel decking is typically 1.5-2x the price of mesh and 2-3x the price of chipboard.

Steel decking is the right choice for heavy-duty hand-loaded applications, food and pharmaceutical environments where hygiene matters, and any warehouse where chipboard's combustion risk is a deal-breaker but mesh is too open for the stock profile.

How to Choose for Your Operation

If your warehouse is sprinklered, choose mesh — almost always. If your warehouse is not sprinklered and you need a continuous solid surface, chipboard is fine. If you need a continuous solid surface and your insurer or fire engineer rules out chipboard, choose galvanised steel.
