Bar storage racking is one of the most overlooked specialist storage categories in UK warehouses, yet it is essential for engineering firms, steel stockholders, builders' merchants, timber merchants, and any operation that holds long, rigid stock. Steel bars, aluminium extrusions, timber battens, copper tube, PVC conduit and scaffold poles all share the same problem: they are awkward to stack, hazardous on the floor, and slow to pick by hand. The right bar racking system turns that loose material into a safe, organised, high-density storage zone that can be picked by one operative with a forklift or crane.
This guide explains the two main approaches to bar and pipe storage — vertical and horizontal cantilever-based systems — and the load capacities, safety rules and cantilever adaptations you need to specify before you buy. Whether you are storing structural steel in a West Midlands fabrication yard or timber mouldings in a North East merchant branch, the same design principles apply.
WHAT IS BAR STORAGE RACKING?
Bar storage racking is a fixed industrial storage system built specifically for long goods. Unlike standard pallet racking, which is designed around 1,200 mm × 1,000 mm pallet footprints, bar racking is designed around the length and weight of the product itself. It typically uses cantilever arms, cradle beams, or vertical pigeon-hole compartments to support bars along their full length, keep them upright or level, and prevent rolling or sliding.
The most common UK configurations are single-sided or double-sided cantilever racks with arms adapted for the product profile. For pipe storage, the arms are fitted with a U-shaped saddle or a wooden cradle. For flat bars and angle sections, a flat arm with an end stop is usually enough. For mixed stock, a combination of arm styles on the same column lets one rack serve several product types.
VERTICAL VS HORIZONTAL BAR STORAGE
The first decision when specifying bar racking is whether the bars should stand vertically or lie horizontally. Each orientation has distinct advantages and safety considerations.

Vertical systems are often built as a grid of pigeon-hole compartments with either open fronts or lockable gates. They are ideal where an operative needs to select a single length without disturbing neighbouring stock. Horizontal systems are usually built from heavy-duty cantilever racks with arms at different heights, allowing full bundles to be loaded and removed by forklift or overhead crane.
LOAD CAPACITIES FOR METAL AND TIMBER BARS
Load capacity for bar racking depends on the arm length, the column section, the steel grade, and how evenly the load is distributed. The figures below are typical for new UK-specification cantilever bar racking. Used or refurbished systems can perform to the same capacities if they are inspected and graded correctly, but the load notice must be re-issued based on the actual condition of the installed components.
Always remember that the total bay load is the sum of all arm loads on that column, not just the individual arm rating. Overloading the upper arms while leaving lower arms empty can create a top-heavy rack that fails during a fork-truck strike or a seismic event. HOW CANTILEVER RACKS ARE ADAPTED FOR BAR AND PIPE STORAGE
Standard cantilever arms are flat steel bars with a slight upward angle. That works for timber sheets and pallets, but it is not ideal for round or smooth bars because the bars can roll off the end. Bar and pipe storage adaptations turn a standard cantilever rack into a long-goods system. The most common UK adaptations include:
For bundles of steel bar, the arms are often fitted with a flat steel plate top and welded-on end cheeks to create a shallow box section. For PVC and copper pipe, a rubber or timber-lined saddle prevents point-loading and protects the pipe surface. The right adaptation is determined by the product profile, the weight, and whether the stock is picked as singles or full bundles.
SAFETY, COMPLIANCE AND INSPECTION
Bar and pipe racking falls under the same UK safety framework as pallet racking. It is a work equipment installation and must be suitable for the purpose, correctly installed, and properly maintained. Under PUWER 1998, the employer must ensure the racking is safe, stable, and used only within its design limits. Under HSE guidance HSG76 and the SEMA codes, the installation should be carried out by competent people, with a load notice fitted at the end of each run and a regular inspection schedule in place.
Key compliance points for bar storage racking include: never exceeding the arm load or bay load; never loading one arm significantly more than the matching arm on the opposite side; keeping arm heights level so bars do not sit on a slope; fitting end stops or gates on any arm that could allow roll-out; and inspecting the rack at least annually, or more often in high-traffic areas. Any damage to an upright, arm, base plate or anchorage must be reported immediately and the bay taken out of service until a SEMA-qualified inspector assesses it.
CHOOSING THE RIGHT BAR RACKING FOR YOUR OPERATION
Before buying bar storage racking, document your product mix. List the maximum length, the heaviest single piece, the heaviest bundle, the typical pick quantity, and the available floor space. If your heaviest bars are under 1,000 kg and your longest bar is under 3 metres, a vertical pigeon-hole system is usually the most space-efficient. If you hold structural steel up to 6 metres or 12 metres, a double-sided cantilever rack with crane access is the standard choice.
Also consider access equipment. Vertical racks are picked by hand or by light trolley. Horizontal racks may need counterbalance forklifts, side loaders, or overhead cranes. The aisle width and the rack height must be matched to the handling equipment, not just the product. Finally, think about environmental protection. Outdoor pipe storage should be galvanised, and steel bar storage near cutting oils or moisture needs drainage and corrosion protection.
