COMMON USED PALLET RACKING SCAMS (AND HOW TO AVOID THEM)

Used pallet racking is one of the smartest budget decisions a UK warehouse can make — but only if you buy from the right people. Every week our office in Stourbridge takes calls from businesses in Birmingham, Manchester, Leeds and further afield asking us to fix installations they bought from unregulated sellers. The pattern is depressingly familiar. This guide is the practical field manual we wish every buyer had before their first quote landed.
There is no formal UK regulator for used-racking resale. Anyone can advertise racking online without an inspection, insurance or a physical yard. HSE guidance and PUWER regulations apply to the end user — meaning if you buy dangerous racking, HSE will look at your business, not the seller's. Below are the eight patterns we see most often, and exactly what to demand from any seller before you commit.
THE 8 MOST COMMON SCAMS
1. Mixed-brand frames sold as one system
Different manufacturers (Dexion, Link 51, Redirack, Apex, Mecalux) use incompatible beam-to-upright connectors. Mixing brands within one bay produces a rack that fails its load rating and is uninsurable — regardless of how good it looks on the surface.
2. 'Just repainted' racking
Fresh paint often hides structural damage, splits at weld lines, or previous repair welds. Always ask why it was painted, when, and whether the paint went on before or after inspection. Insist on pre-paint photos.
3. Missing or fabricated load labels
Load labels are how a rack proves its capacity. Some sellers strip damaged labels; others print fake ones. Legitimate suppliers issue a fresh SEMA-standard load notice on installation, verified against manufacturer data — not a peel-and-stick decal.
4. 'No inspection needed' cash deals
Racking sold with no willingness to accept a pre-purchase inspection is racking with something to hide. A £150 inspection on a £15,000 project pays for itself the first time it catches a bent upright.
5. Grade C stock sold as Grade A
Without a written grading statement per line item, sellers can call anything 'Grade A'. See our full grading breakdown in the linked guide below and demand written grading in your quote.
6. Bogus 'clearance' urgency
'Must sell today or it goes to scrap' pressure tactics are designed to short-circuit due diligence. Real clearance jobs run for weeks and give buyers time to inspect properly.
7. Delivered stock doesn't match the sample
Photos sent by the seller show pristine stock; the lorry arrives with half of it bent. Always agree in writing that the delivered load must match the graded sample or the balance is refunded before offload.
8. No public liability insurance
If the installer isn't insured, any accident during install becomes your liability. Ask for a current insurance certificate showing £5m+ public liability. UM Storage Systems carries £10m cover on every job.

WHY MARKETPLACES AREN'T ENOUGH
We're not against Facebook Marketplace, eBay or Gumtree in principle — for a handful of shelving units, or spares, they can work. But for a live pallet-racking installation carrying tens or hundreds of tonnes of stock over people's heads, the risk profile is very different. Marketplace sellers are almost never SEIRS registered, don't issue load notices, don't inspect against SEMA guidance, and disappear the moment a claim is raised. The £2,000 you save is trivial compared to a HSE prosecution, a public liability claim, or the cost of a fatal collapse.
