Why Pharmaceutical & Cold Storage Racking Is Different
Standard pallet racking is engineered for load, not for hygiene, condensation resistance or regulatory traceability. In a GMP or GDP environment the racking is part of the quality system: every upright, beam and base plate has to be cleanable, corrosion-resistant, and installed to a layout that supports audit-ready segregation. Hygienic Racking Materials
Hot-Dip Galvanised (Preferred)
Hot-dip galvanising to BS EN ISO 1461 gives an 85–140 micron zinc coating that resists condensation cycles down to −30°C. It's non-shedding, cleanable with standard sanitisers, and forms the default finish for GMP, GDP, BRCGS and veterinary storage. Every upright, beam, base plate and bracing tube in a compliant system should be galvanised — not just the visible faces.
Powder-Coated Epoxy
Suitable for ambient GMP where washdown is limited. Cheaper than galvanising but vulnerable to chipping at forklift-strike points, which then flakes into the product zone. Not recommended for cold or chill environments where condensation can attack chipped edges.
Stainless Steel (Specialist)
Grade 304 or 316L stainless is reserved for sterile filling, API weighing rooms and clean-rooms ISO 8 or better. Cost is 4–6× galvanised, so it's rarely specified for bulk warehouse storage.
Cold Store Racking Formats
Cold and freezer warehouses cost 3–5× more per m³ to run than ambient stores, so cube utilisation drives every design decision. High-density formats dominate:
- Drive-in racking — 75–85% cube utilisation, ideal for LIFO batch storage of frozen product.
- Push-back racking — 60–70% utilisation with FIFO, well-suited to 2–8°C vaccine storage.
- Mobile pallet racking — up to 90% cube utilisation with a single working aisle. The preferred format for cold-chain pharmaceutical DCs.
- Narrow-aisle racking — retains full selectivity with 1.6–1.8m aisles. Good for GMP release-controlled stock.
GMP & GDP Design Requirements
MHRA inspectors expect the racking layout to support the quality system. That means dedicated, signposted zones for:
- Quarantine — physically segregated bays for received-but-untested stock.
- Released — the main pick-face population, batch-labelled.
- Rejected / recalled — locked or caged bays, controlled access only.
- Returned goods — a separate area for post-distribution returns pending disposition.
Every zone needs a certified load notice, a labelled location map in the SOP, and — for cold-chain — mapped temperature sensors at the worst-case locations (typically top-back of the rack on the door-side wall).
How to Read a Cold Store Load Notice
A cold-store load notice looks similar to a standard pallet racking load notice but must additionally record:
- Operating temperature range (e.g. −25°C to +5°C)
- Finish and specification (e.g. HDG to BS EN ISO 1461, mean 85μm)
- Manufacturer's certified capacity at operating temperature (some grades of steel de-rate below −20°C)
