Pallet racking boards — also known as decking — turn a bare beam pair into a solid shelf capable of holding loose cartons, hand-picked stock, small parts totes and non-palletised goods. Choosing between timber, welded mesh and steel slat decking is one of the most common specification questions we're asked in the UK, and the wrong choice creates fire-risk headaches, sprinkler modification costs and load-capacity surprises. What Are Pallet Racking Boards?
Pallet racking boards are load-bearing panels that clip or sit across a pair of beams inside a rack bay. They convert the two-beam ladder profile of adjustable pallet racking (APR) into a continuous shelf. Warehouse managers reach for them whenever a level needs to hold anything other than a full UK or Euro pallet — small cartons, hand-picked SKUs, tote boxes, oversized non-palletised items, or fragile goods that would otherwise fall between beams.
All three main decking types (timber, mesh, slat) sit inside the same beam pairs and require no dedicated frames — they retrofit into any Dexion, Link 51, Apex, Redirack, Mecalux or SSI Schaefer bay. The only decision is which material best fits the storage profile, fire strategy and budget.
Timber (Chipboard) Decking
38mm high-density chipboard is the traditional UK choice. It's cheap, quick to fit, and gives a smooth surface for hand-picking. A 2,700 × 1,100mm chipboard deck costs around £18–£30 depending on quantity and grade, making it the lowest-capex option per bay.
The problem is fire. Timber decking is combustible and, more importantly, forms a horizontal barrier that stops overhead sprinkler water reaching the levels below. Most modern insurance-driven fire risk assessments now require either mesh decking or additional in-rack sprinkler heads on every timber-decked level — which typically wipes out the cost saving. Timber decking is still fine for archive rooms, non-sprinklered smaller units, and dry-goods storage where fire load is low.
Load capacity is decent: 500–800kg uniformly distributed load (UDL) per bay for a standard 38mm chipboard, up to around 1,000kg for a 44mm heavy-duty board on close beam centres.
Welded Mesh Decking
Welded steel mesh decking is now the default UK specification for anything storing cartons or loose stock at height. A typical panel uses a 50 × 50mm grid of 4mm–5mm wire with 3–5 support channels (waterfall or step design) welded underneath.
Mesh has three big advantages over timber. First, it's non-combustible — no contribution to fire load and no restriction on standard overhead sprinklers. Second, water, dust and debris pass through instead of pooling on the shelf, which matters in cold stores, food handling, and any environment where hidden moisture would rot timber. Third, damage is visible — a bent panel or corroded weld is obvious on inspection instead of hiding under a wooden top.
Standard mesh decks are rated 800–1,000kg UDL per bay. Heavy-duty mesh (5mm wire, 4 or 5 channel) reaches 1,200–1,500kg UDL. Expect £45–£75 per bay in used or trade quantities, £60–£95 new.
Steel Slat Boards
Slat boards use folded steel planks (typically 50–90mm wide) laid across the beams. They give a semi-solid shelf that combines the sprinkler-friendly profile of mesh with a smoother picking surface. Slat is common in retail back-of-house, e-commerce fulfilment, and small-parts kitting.
Load ratings run from 600kg UDL (light gauge) to 2,000kg UDL (heavy gauge on tight beam centres). Slat is the priciest of the three at £55–£90 per bay but is the most durable and the easiest to keep clean.

Fire Safety and UK Regulations
The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 makes the "responsible person" accountable for the fire strategy in every UK workplace. In practice, insurers and fire risk assessors default to FM Global and LPCB guidance, which strongly favours mesh or slat decking on any sprinklered rack over 4m tall. Timber decking is not banned, but it typically forces in-rack sprinkler heads at every decked level — a five-figure retrofit in a mid-sized warehouse.
If you're specifying a new fit-out, going mesh from day one is almost always cheaper than the sprinkler modifications timber would force. If you already have timber and are re-racking, this is the moment to switch.
Which Decking Should You Choose?
Our default recommendation for a UK warehouse in 2026 is welded mesh decking unless you have a specific reason to choose otherwise — it's non-combustible, sprinkler-compatible, load-adequate for 95% of hand-picked storage, and lasts the lifetime of the rack. Choose timber only in non-sprinklered, low-fire-load, dry environments (archives, offices, small workshops). Choose steel slat when you need the smoothest picking surface or the highest per-bay load, and budget allows.
