HOW TO SELL USED PALLET RACKING — THE UK GUIDE

    Published 17 June 2026 · 10 min read

If your warehouse is closing, relocating, or simply has surplus pallet racking sitting idle, that steel is worth real money — often thousands of pounds more than the scrap value. This guide walks you through valuing your racking, dismantling it safely, arranging collection, and turning surplus storage into cash without taking on the risk yourself.

UM Storage Systems is one of the UK's largest buyers of used pallet racking. We buy, dismantle and collect nationwide — from a handful of bays through to entire 100,000 sq ft distribution centres. Here's exactly how the process works and how to maximise your return.

    1. WHAT DETERMINES THE VALUE OF USED PALLET RACKING

Five factors drive the resale price of used pallet racking. Understanding each one helps you present the system in its best light and benchmark any offer you receive.

    Brand

Tier-one UK brands — Dexion, Link 51, Apex, Redirack, Mecalux, AR Racking, SSI Schaefer — hold their value best because they're in constant demand for matching extensions. Generic or imported racking with no traceable brand sells for 30–50% less. If you don't know the brand, a quick photo of the upright slot pattern and beam connector is all a specialist needs to identify it.

    Condition

Straight uprights, undamaged baseplates, original load notices and intact beam connectors all add value. Surface rust is acceptable; bent frames, weld cracks, and impact damage reduce the price because those components are stripped for parts rather than resold complete. Honest disclosure speeds up the valuation and avoids price reductions on collection day.

    Age & Specification

Standard adjustable pallet racking from the last 25 years is highly resaleable — bay sizes haven't changed. Niche specifications (drive-in, push-back, narrow-aisle, cantilever) need a matched buyer but often command a premium because new equivalents are expensive and have long lead times.

    Volume

Larger lots attract better per-bay pricing because transport and labour are spread across more units. 50+ bay lots typically achieve 10–20% higher per-bay rates than small ad-hoc parcels.

    Location & Access

Sites with ground-floor access, a clear yard and a forklift available speed up dismantling and improve the price. Sites with restricted access, lift-only loading, or out-of-hours-only windows cost more to clear and reduce the net offer. We work across the entire UK and adjust pricing transparently based on access.

    2. INDICATIVE BUY-BACK VALUES (2026)

As a guide, here's what UM Storage Systems is currently paying for used pallet racking in fair condition. Final figures depend on inspection.

    ComponentTypical Buy-Back
    Upright frame (≤6m, tier-one brand)£35 – £85 each
    Upright frame (6m–12m, tier-one brand)£80 – £180 each
    Beam pair (2.7m, ≥2,000kg UDL)£10 – £22 per pair
Wire mesh deck (per level)£3 – £8 each
    Drive-in / push-back lanePOA — usually premium
Mixed bay (complete, standard APR)£25 – £70 per bay

    3. THE DECOMMISSIONING & DISMANTLING PROCESS

Dismantling pallet racking is regulated under PUWER 1998 and the HSE's Warehousing & Storage guidance. It is not a job for general handymen — collapsed racking causes serious injuries every year. A compliant decommission follows a strict sequence:

Full off-load: every pallet, tote and stored item removed from the system before any work begins.
Pre-strip inspection: a SEIRS-qualified engineer documents damage, load notices and component counts.
Method statement & RAMS issued to the site, with exclusion zones and PPE requirements agreed.
Top-down dismantling: top beams first, working downward bay by bay — never side-to-side.
Component stacking by type (uprights, beams, decks) for safe handling and accurate counts.
Loading to curtainsiders or flatbeds with edge protection, straps and corner boards.
Site sweep, floor patch where baseplates were anchored, and clearance certificate issued.

When UM Storage Systems buys your racking, every step above is included in the offer. There is no hidden labour charge, no skip hire, and no separate disposal cost.

    4. LOGISTICS & COLLECTION

Once the racking is stacked and counted, transport is arranged based on volume. A typical 80-bay system fills one to two artics. We operate our own fleet and partner with established hauliers across England, Scotland and Wales — so a Midlands site can usually be cleared within a week, and longer hauls (e.g. Highlands, Cornwall) within ten working days.

    5. PAYMENT & PAPERWORK

Payment is made by BACS on the day of collection once the engineer-in-charge confirms the component count matches the quote. You receive a signed collection note, a waste transfer note for any scrap fraction, and — if requested — a written confirmation that the system has been decommissioned and removed (useful for landlord dilapidations).

    6. HOW TO MAXIMISE YOUR RETURN

Sell as a complete system rather than piecemeal — bays are worth more than parts.
Photograph upright stamps and beam connectors to confirm brand and accelerate valuation.
Include accessories (mesh decks, column guards, pallet stops) in the lot — they add real value.
Give as much notice as possible — urgent same-week clearances command less premium than planned exits.
Avoid scrap merchants. They pay tonnage; specialists pay component value.
Get two quotes — UM Storage Systems will beat any like-for-like written offer from a SEMA member dealer.

    CASE STUDY: 3PL CLOSURE, BIRMINGHAM

A 3PL operator vacating a 60,000 sq ft Birmingham facility had 420 bays of mixed Dexion and Link 51 racking, plus 30 bays of cantilever. Initial scrap valuations came in around £6,500. UM Storage Systems quoted £38,400 for the full buy-back including dismantling, collection and site clearance — paid on the day. The site was handed back to the landlord defect-free within nine working days.
