Dexion vs Link 51 Pallet Racking — Which One Should You Buy in the UK?
A no-nonsense, independent comparison of the UK's two most dominant pallet racking brands — compatibility, slot patterns, load capacity, used-market availability and when each is the right choice.
If you have ever walked into a UK warehouse built between 1980 and 2010, chances are the racking is either Dexion or Link 51. Between them they installed the overwhelming majority of pallet racking in British warehouses — and even today, most used racking coming onto the UK market carries one of those two brand stamps. So when a customer asks us "which is better, Dexion or Link 51?" the honest answer is: it depends on what you already have, how much you want to spend, and how quickly you need it up.
A quick history — why these two brands matter
Dexion was founded in 1937 and effectively invented the slotted angle and, later, the modern adjustable pallet racking system. Its Speedlock, P90 and P200 profiles set the template the whole industry copied. Link 51 came later and became the UK's largest domestic manufacturer, dominating the market from the 1980s onwards with the SP-70 and SP-80 systems that most UK warehouses still run today.
Because both brands installed millions of pallet positions in the UK, both produce huge volumes of second-hand stock every year as warehouses close, relocate or upgrade — which is why Dexion and Link 51 dominate the UK used racking market.
Compatibility — the single most important thing to know
Dexion and Link 51 are not interchangeable. The slot pitch, beam-end connector geometry and upright hole pattern are different. You cannot drop a Link 51 SP-70 beam into a Dexion Speedlock upright and get a safe fit — the load notice on the bay is immediately voided, and any SEMA-aligned inspector will red-tag the aisle.

- Link 51 SP-70 with matched Link 51 SP-70
- Any brand within its own SEMA-tested profile family
Never mix
- Dexion uprights with Link 51 beams (or vice versa)
- Speedlock with P90 uprights within one bay
- SP-70 with SP-80 beams on load-critical runs
Slot patterns and beam connectors
Dexion Speedlock uses a distinctive tear-drop / keyhole slot on ~50 mm pitch with a two-lug beam end connector. Dexion P90 upgrades to a heavier frame with the same slot family but a broader hole for the safety lock pin. Link 51 SP-70 uses a rounded rectangular slot on ~75 mm pitch with a three-lug beam end; SP-80 uses a stiffer profile with the same connector family. In practice, that means an experienced installer can identify either brand at 10 paces — and you should insist any supplier photographs the slot pattern before you buy used stock.
Load capacity — what the numbers actually mean
For a like-for-like span of 2,700 mm and a typical UK Euro pallet weighing 700 kg gross, both brands comfortably rate above 2,000 kg per pair of beams. Heavier-gauge legacy Link 51 SP-70 frames tend to out-perform equivalent legacy Dexion Speedlock uprights on longer spans, while modern Dexion P90 frames match the current SEMA design curves used by every UK manufacturer today.
The number that matters is the one on the load notice at the end of the aisle — not the brand name on the upright. Any UK installer worth using will issue a load notice as part of the installation.
Availability in the UK used market
Because Link 51 dominated UK warehousing for two decades, SP-70 and SP-80 are the most widely available used systems in the UK — we can usually source matched stock inside 5 working days. Dexion Speedlock is next in availability. Genuine Dexion P90 is scarcer and typically prices 15–30% above Link 51 for equivalent capacity, so it usually only makes sense if you're extending an existing P90 run.

Used Link 51 SP-70 typically lands between £28–£38 per pallet position supply-only across the UK, with used Dexion Speedlock at £30–£42 per pallet position and Dexion P90 at £42–£58.
